Young Designers - a glimpse of the future at Formex

Every season Formex receives a number of exciting applications for Young Designers – Formex's platform for young, unestablished designers. At the fair in August 19-22, 23 selected designers will be introduced in different categories, including SAGA MELINA and Nina Johanna Christensen, who are participating for the first time.

SAGA MELINA was founded by Saga Gevargez in 2014. After a traffic accident in 2011 Saga suffered injuries that changed her life. She was not able to continue to work for the UN. The injuries to her brain robbed her off her memory, but she instead experienced a flow of creativity. She trained to be a silversmith and stone setter. Today she designs jewelry that primarily is inspired by buildings around the world. Saga experiments with different materials in order to bring the details from the architecture that affect her to her jewelry.

“I use my senses during the process to see and feel how they best fit the body. Sustainability and function are just as important as beautiful design. My jewelry is made in Örebro and I use silver, copper, brass, wood and leather,” says Saga Gevargez.

Nina Johanna Christensen is a glass blower, artist and designer who works with both unique works and smaller series. She is also the lead singer and songwriter of the band, Skilla, from Malmö. This fall she will present her series of utility glasses, A Material in Motion.

“I wanted to use A Material in Motion to show my fascination with the organic and living aspects in the warm, liquid mass of glass. That was what got me started in glass. My focus is on trying to maintain a feeling of movement in the glasses, like they are still in motion and are being re-shaped while you are holding them, looking at them, using them,” says Nina Johanna Christensen.

Products that have not yet been produced by an established company are submitted in application for Young Designers. The same designer is allowed three exhibits in the area, but each must be for a new product. Adjacent to Young Designers is the Next Step exhibition, for exhibitors who have come a little farther along in establishing their name in the industry. Young Designers is being organized for the thirteenth time and Next Step for the ninth time.
