Christian Juslin sings Cavaradossi at Theater Bonn
Many exciting challenges await tenor Christian Juslin of Åland. On Sunday 3 November Tosca opens at Theater Bonn with Christian singing the role of Cavaradossi. After this Christian takes on the role of Don Carlo at Chemnitz and then two other leading roles at other European opera houses. Christian moved to Bonn in September and now lives there with his family.
Question: Your career gathered momentum after 2011/2012 when you sang the role of Pinkerton at Folkoperan in Stockholm. You sang the role of Cavaradossi at Theater Vanemuine in Estonia and that of Edmund in Malmö Opera’s widely acclaimed production of Reimann’s expressionist opera LEAR. Last summer you were awarded the prestigious Jussi Björling Society prize. Tell us – what set off your career?
Answer: That´s a very good question! I think it’s a combination of various things, perhaps the most important of which is that I have dared make music my own way and that I have had support from people around me. Then it’s also a question of maturity.
Q: Many people say that your voice sounds Italian. Have you particularly studied the Italian way of singing?
A: Yes, I have. I studied in Italy in 2001 and the following year in Switzerland for maestro Bruno Pola. He made me sing “in Italian” and like that way of singing.
Q: Who are your most important teachers and role models?
A: The first person I always mention is Finnish tenor Peter Lindroos who unfortunately died in a tragic car accident. Other models are probably Italian singers from the 40s, 50s and 60s, Franco Corelli, Mario del Monaco, Ettore Bastianini.
Q: What is your future objective?
A: To carry on along the chosen path. To get vocal challenges that will give audiences and listeners pleasure.
Christian Juslin studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. He made his operatic debut at Folkoperan in Stockholm in the role of Alfredo in La Traviata, after which followed appearances as Macduff in Macbeth, Cavaradossi in Tosca and the Duke in Rigoletto. Christian Juslin is also a very versatile musician and has worked as a church organist, choir and orchestra conductor.
