Ludvig Svensson - 125 years!
Sweden’s oldest textile factory turns 125 and looks ahead with the collection ”Trends over Time” by dipping into it s rich textile heritage. The collection points in a forward direction by dipping into Ludvig Svensson’s 125-year textile inheritance. Weaving threads backwards in time, the collection is an homage by contemporary designers to designs from bygone eras. It is a celebration of 125 years of handicrafts and Swedish design history.
Astrakan
Eva Larsson found her inspiration for Astrahan in one of Ludvig Svensson’s well-preserved collection books. The weave is from the period 1910-1920 with elements of the geometrical, anti-art nouveau design philosophy of Wiener Werkstätte. It was probably intended for use in drapes or bedspreads. Eva Larsson has also been influenced by the skilful way in which her historical colleagues varied plain weaves by using colourful weft threads.
Peak
After the Great Depression of the 1930s and World War II, the 1950s was a decade of recovery and expansion. The pattern created by Cathrine Ahlenius for Peak lets 1950s optimism take the leap forward to 2012. She has been inspired by the popular loose weave techniques of that era, techniques with their origins in 3rd-century China. Using flameproof polyester fibres, Peak is an elegant development of the net curtain which has then been mangled to provide lustre.
Mir
The post-modern 1980s brought a boom in the furnishing and decorating of public spaces in Sweden. Public spaces require the highest quality, flame-retardant textiles and this opened a new market for Ludvig Svensson. The Memphis-inspired curtain fabric Space by Lars Kjelin was a great success. Three decades later, Cathrine Ahlenius has further refined this major design success from the 1980s. The joy of design and colour incorporated into Mir is a celebration of playfulness.
Water is important to textile production. Not everybody, however, has access to clean water. Ludvig Svensson is therefore donating one euro to WaterAid for every metre of Trends over Time fabrics sold.
