Swedavia’s airports to donate personal protective equipment to health care

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is an increased need for personal protective equipment for healthcare employees in Sweden. Swedavia’s airports are now contributing by donating equipment such as breathing masks and protective eyewear to health care facilities throughout the country.

Under normal conditions, there is a given supply of personal protective equipment at Swedavia’s ten airports. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic and the exceptional situation, Swedavia has decided to donate all personal protective equipment and other equipment that the airports can spare to health care facilities across Sweden.

“This is a very difficult time for all of society, when collaboration and cooperation between people, institutions and organisations are more important than ever. We at Swedavia naturally want to do what we can to contribute, and donating personal protective equipment that can be of greater use right now in Swedish health care seems the obvious thing to do,” says Marie Wiksborg, director of business support and security at Swedavia.

Altogether, about a hundred multiple-use breathing masks or respirators, a thousand pairs of protective eyewear and 100,000 single-use gloves are being donated. Along with the personal protective equipment, each airport is taking inventory in order to find other materials that could potentially be used to fight the spread of coronavirus.

For example, Swedavia has donated a hundred pairs of separating posts with retractable bands usually used to separate queues at Stockholm Arlanda Airport to Region Stockholm. These will now be used to separate flows and organise queues at drop-in clinics in the metropolitan area.

“The airport directors at Swedavia’s airports around Sweden are now collecting the equipment they can spare – personal protective equipment or other materials that could be of use – and donating it to suitable health care clinics locally in their region,” Marie Wiksborg.
