Airport Director: Important to know before your summer trip

The most travel-intensive period of the year is here. A large number of passengers are expected to pass through Stockholm Arlanda Airport during June, July and August, and the airport offers a total of 17 new scheduled routes during the summer season.

"I would like to wish everyone a warm welcome to Arlanda this summer. Both we at Swedavia and the airport's operators are well prepared and ready to receive all expectant holidaymakers," says Arlanda's Airport Director Karl Eklund.

" I would like to encourage everyone to prepare for their trip by checking when we recommend you to arrive at the airport and to head straight to a check-in kiosk to collect your baggage tag and also check in if you haven't already done so at home. By arriving at the airport at the recommended time and being well prepared, you contribute to a smoother flow for everyone with shorter waiting times in both baggage drop-off and security checks," Karl Eklund continues.

The general recommendation from Swedavia regarding when passengers should arrive at the airport before departure is 2.5–2 hours for those travelling within Europe. For those travelling outside of Europe, we recommend 3.5–3 hours before departure. On the start page of Arlanda's website, there is also a tool where passengers can enter their flight number and receive a recommendation adapted to their specific departure.

"However, keep in mind that a recommendation is just a recommendation. As a traveller, you are always personally responsible for keeping yourself updated via your airline about your specific flight," says Karl Eklund.

Once at the airport, travellers are asked to go directly to a check-in kiosk to collect their baggage tag. The more people who prepare for the baggage drop-off by attaching the baggage tag to the suitcase, the shorter the waiting times will be for everyone when the bag is then to be handed into the Bag drop. The check-in kiosks, which are located in the terminals and SkyCity, also allow you to check in for those who have not already done so at home and print out boarding passes.

“Once you've attached your bag tag and left your bag in the Bag drop, it's time to go to security. Here it is extra important to look at and follow the instructions on site as they are different depending on which security check you pass. I would also like to recommend downloading Swedavia's app where you can receive push notifications about your flight and take part in our new, commercial offerings here at Arlanda. Since last summer, we have opened the Marketplace in Terminal 5, Arlanda's largest investment ever in an improved range of food, drink and shopping. The range is continuously developed during the year, but I can already promise that last year's returning holidaymakers will be pleasantly surprised by all the news at Arlanda," says Karl Eklund.

Airport Director Karl Eklund's checklist for a smoother start to the summer trip

Follow our recommendation on when you should be at the airport before your departure. Swedavia's general basic recommendation for when you should be at the airport is 2.5–2 hours before your departure if you are travelling within Europe. For trips outside Europe, you are recommended to be on site 3.5–3 hours before departure. On the start page of Arlanda's website, there is also a new tool, When should I be at the airport?, where you as a passenger can enter your destination or flight number and get a recommendation when you should be at the airport that is adapted to your particular departure.

Check in (if you haven't already done it online) and collect your baggage tags at a kiosk

Leave your luggage in the Bag drop. Once you have collected your baggage tags at one of our check-in kiosks, you leave your baggage in the Bag drop, for the airlines that offer the service. Don't forget to save your baggage check.

Prepare for security control. If you are only travelling with hand luggage and have checked in online, you are welcome to go directly to the security checkpoint. The rules in the new security check in Terminal 5 are different from other security checks at the airport, so pay attention to which control you go through and follow the instructions you receive in connection with the security check you are going to pass.

Keep track of your flight via Swedavia's app. By downloading the Swedavia app, you can easily and smoothly keep track of your flights. Via the app, you can subscribe to information about your particular flight and receive ongoing updates on terminal, waiting time at the security checkpoint, check-in desk, boarding time and gate.
