New direct route to Hamburg from Göteborg Landvetter Airport
Eurowings is expanding at Göteborg Landvetter Airport and starting up a new direct route to Germany’s second largest city, Hamburg. The German low cost carrier will thus increase its range of flights on offer from Gothenburg with the addition of another destination, along with its current route to Düsseldorf.
On March 29, 2020, Eurowings will begin flying non-stop to Hamburg from Göteborg Landvetter six times a week. Eurowings, which is part of the Lufthansa Group, will be the second airline to serve this route.
International traffic at Göteborg Landvetter continues to grow, and passenger volume in September saw a 3 per cent increase compared to last year. Hamburg and Germany in general have become increasingly attractive in recent years, and passenger volume between Gothenburg and Hamburg has doubled since 2016. Germany is the second largest market for incoming visitors to the Gothenburg region calculated in the number of guest-nights, and the positive trend has held steady in 2019.
“We welcome the investment that Eurowings is making in the region by launching another direct international route from Göteborg Landvetter. Germany is one of our largest foreign markets for outgoing passengers, and it is important for leisure and business travellers in western Sweden to reach Hamburg easily and conveniently, given that the number of passengers has doubled over the past three years and we see a continued growing interest. The new direct route also meets the demand from German travellers who want to visit Gothenburg,” says Anna Strömwall, airport director at Göteborg Landvetter Airport.
“We are delighted to grow our network in Sweden with an additional route from Hamburg to Gothenburg. The flights will operate 6 times per week starting end of March. Our passengers will now have more flexibility to fly from Scandinavia to Germany or connect to many other European destinations”, says Laura Karsten, mediarelations manager at Eurowings.
Hamburg is a federal state as well as an economic and cultural centre. For visitors, the city is popular for its architecture, art and culture, its lively nightlife, canals and fine parks. Just as Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city, Hamburg is Germany’s second largest. The two cities also have other things in common. Like Gothenburg, Hamburg is an international, welcoming city, with thriving harbour operations that constitute an important part of the city’s trade and prosperous business world.
The new route will be launched on March 29, 2020, and will be operated by A319 (150 seats) and A320 (174 seats) aircraft. The route offers year-round service, with six weekly departures (not Saturday). Göteborg Landvetter – Hamburg will be Eurowings’ fifth direct route from Swedavia’s airports. Along with the routes from Göteborg Landvetter to Hamburg and Düsseldorf, the carrier flies from Stockholm Arlanda to Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne.
For many years, Swedavia has carried out ambitious sustainability work. All ten of its airports shall have zero emissions of fossil carbon dioxide from their own operations by 2020. Swedavia also works actively to promote the industry’s transition to bio fuel and has the goal that five per cent of all fuel used to refuel aircraft at Swedish airports shall be fossil-free by 2025
