Swedfund, Snapper Hill Clinic and TLG partner up to improve the quality of healthcare in Liberia

Monrovia based Snapper Hill Clinic (“SHC”) has secured technical assistance funding from the Swedish Development Finance Institution, Swedfund through its shareholder TLG Capital (“TLG”). The funds will be put towards targeted improvements in the quality of the healthcare services it currently provides.

SHC has been in operation since 1983 and was the only clinical service provider in Monrovia during the height of the civil war (1989 - 1991). It showed its resilience as a healthcare provider again when it became one of the few outpatient facilities providing services during the Ebola crises of 2014-16.

TLG initially acquired a minority stake in Snapper Hill Clinic in 2010. It invested again in 2016, this time with debt. After Swedfund’s investment into the TLG Credit Opportunities Fund earlier this year, TLG encouraged Snapper Hill to apply to Swedfund directly for technical assistance funding.

'We are grateful to TLG for introducing us to Swedfund and guiding the application process. Through Swedfund’s technical assistance funding, Snapper Hill will have the chance to make a positive impact on Liberia’s fragile healthcare system. Indeed, we hope that Swedfund’s involvement will catalyse other DFIs’ involvement in the region, and more specifically in Liberia’s healthcare sector.' said Varsay E. Sirleaf, Snapper Hill Clinic CEO.

The recent funding will allow Snapper Hill Clinic to fast-track its aim to set standards for quality health care in the country and lead the way for greater private sector involvement in Liberia’s health outcomes. Funding will be used to retain advice and consultants to digitize the clinics’ records, further develop and strengthen its organizational and financial controls, and expand access to high quality healthcare services across Liberia. Further funding may be drawn down later to accommodate solar powering its clinics.

‘Swedfund’s contribution to the TLG growth story and that of our portfolio companies is invaluable. We are pleased to have facilitated this relationship which will see growth and improved service delivery in Snapper Hill. We are committed to supporting our portfolio companies in ways that grow their businesses and develop local communities. TLG’s ethos of financial returns going hand in hand with social returns continues to drive our actions’, said Isha Doshi, a partner at TLG.

'Investments in healthcare are central to all emerging markets, and leads to positive development effects in the sector as well as in society. By investing in TLG Credit Opportunities Fund we have had the possibility to support Snapper Hill Clinic and other SMEs in the region. These companies play a key role in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals and inclusive growth, which goes hand in hand with Swedfund’s mission. We are very pleased to admit funds to Snapper Hill Clinic, for improving the quality of health care in Liberia', said Maria Håkansson, CEO of Swedfund.
