Tanita Celebrates World Health Day, Notes Diet, Exercise and Behavior Modification Are Key To Battling Obesity

Amsterdam, Netherland, April 7, 2017 – World Health Day is celebrated every year on this day to promote awareness around different health topics. The theme for 2017 is ‘Depression’, one of the leading causes of ill health and disability that WHO says impacts over 300 million people worldwide, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and 2015.

“These figures are a wakeup call for society around the world especially due to the strong links between depression and other disorders, ranging from heart disease to loss of energy and a change in appetite,” said Jan Alderlieste, managing director of Tanita EMEA, a world leader in health and fitness monitoring equipment.

He noted how a bidirectional link between excess weight and depression has been reported in multiple research studies and publications, which indicates a need to treat both disorders simultaneously.

A 2010 study published in the Archives of General Psychiatry found that obese individuals have a 55 percent higher risk of developing depression, while people suffering depression have a 58 percent higher risk of becoming obese.

Many factors can have an impact on both an individual’s mood and weight. Successful weight management not only aids fitness but can also be an efficient way to reduce stress and lift mood, according to the Harvard T.H Chan School of Public Health.

“At Tanita, we encourage people to better understand the composition of their bodies so that they can develop tailor-made weight management strategies geared to building and sustaining levels of fitness and moderating behaviour in order to promote healthier lifestyles that can also help them battle feelings of anxiety and depression,” said Jan Alderlieste.
