Today is the perfect opportunity for Europeans to start fighting the flab

Amsterdam, September 28, 2017 – WHO says Europe has the second highest proportion of overweight or obese people, ranking just behind the USA, with Eurostat saying some 51.6% of men and women over 18 years of age were overweight in 2014, a 6% rise from the 48.6% level in 2009.

And the young are at particular risk. Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO regional director for Europe, said that “despite sustained efforts to tackle childhood obesity, one in three adolescents is still estimated to be overweight or obese in Europe, with the highest rates found in southern European and Mediterranean countries."

“Such high levels of excessive weight are deeply concerning as we known it can lead to heart disease, diabetes and cancer as well as feelings of depression and self-esteem,” said Jan Alderlieste, Tanita Chief Operations Officer in Europe, the Middle East and Russia.
Speaking as Europe celebrated National Fitness Day on Wednesday, September 27, Jan stresses that obesity is the result of unhealthy eating and activity and lifestyle changes encouraging people to eat less and exercise more can help tackle the problem.
Alderlieste, a keep fit enthusiast in his free time, recommends that people wanting get a fitness programme underway should consider investing in a body composition monitor rather than a traditional bathroom scale. “Body fat monitoring is a far better guide to health than weight alone as it shows the pounds made of fat and the pounds made of lean tissue. Measuring the changes in body fat will allow you to make healthy changes to your lifestyle which will benefit the whole family,” he said.
Alderlieste uses Tanita body fat monitors, which are also used by the EU national health bodies, sporting clubs and leisure faculties, both in his own bathroom and local fitness centre. Tanita developed the world’s first body fat monitor and are market leaders in this field, producing highly accurate body fat monitors for both professionals and regular shoppers.
