MS Fritjof Nansen has set sail with design by Tillberg Design of Sweden

Last year Hurtigruten’s hybrid Roald Amundsen was completed and became the first cruise ship able to operate on battery power. Now her sister vessel MS Fritjof Nansen has set sail and is currently on an inauguration tour around northern Europe. She departs on her maiden voyage, from Hamburg to the Norwegian fjords, on April 1st.

The expedition cruise ship is named after the Nobel prize-winning scientist and adventurer Fritjof Nansen, who navigated the Northwest Passage in 1903-1906 and was first to reach the South Pole, in 1911. The ship can accommodate 530 guests and will offer 12-21 days expedition cruises to remote Arctic destinations like Alaska, Svalbard and Antarctica but also warm destinations like the Caribbean, Central and South America. As the designer behind the project, Tillberg Design of Sweden is honored to be a part of the journey.

“The essential focus in the design for Hurtigruten’s new cruise ship has been sustainable and timeless design to ensure the guests get the very best sustainable experience at sea,” says Daniel Nerhagen, TDoS Partner & Project Director for MS Fritjof Nansen.

The interior is minimalistic with bright colours in natural materials such as birch, oak and wool. The furnishing is comfortable and modest to give full attention on expedition experiences. The core of the ship is the Science center, a meeting point equipped with professional microscopes, a virtual reality station and four large screens. The guests can go deeper into the history and nature behind the destinations together with the expedition team consisting of hand-picked experts. Besides guiding the guests, the scientists collect water samples and make analysis of levels of plankton and pollutants such as microplastics along the journey. The expedition team tailors activities for the guests according to destination and weather condition. The ship has kayaks, underwater drones, SUPs and Explorer boats which can be used by the guests, all to add memorable experiences.

In addition, Nansen has three restaurants with a wide range of dining options, two bars, a panorama lounge and a wellness centre, all designed by TDoS.
