Truecaller Gears Up to Release Their API

Truecaller releases API allowing developers to access its database with over 600 million names and phone numbers - including landline, mobile and pre-paid numbers from all over the world. So far over 1,000 companies and developers have signed up, and those that provide the most value to the users will be hand-picked for the early access testing phase.

Stockholm, Sweden- April 23, 2013: Truecaller announces this week that they are in the testing period of their API, and is drawing a large waiting line of applicants. Truecaller’s mission is to create the world’s most comprehensive global phone directory that is intelligent, accurate and easy to use for people and businesses. The company has created a database with over 600 million names and numbers - including landline, mobile and pre-paid numbers.

Alan Mamedi, CEO and co-founder of Truecaller, explains that “Truecaller’s API will be used to benefit societies and companies all over the world. The API, which Truecaller is offering to hand-picked businesses, includes reverse number lookup to match a name, and also a score system that determines if the number is spam or how high in popularity the number is.”

User confidence in Truecaller is key to the company’s continued success and therefore the screening process is rigorous. Applicants have to describe in detail how they are planning to use the API and for what purpose. Truecaller then handpicks developers that are in line with Truecaller's mission and supplies value to their users. Truecaller will not consider telemarketing companies for any access to their API. The API does not include name search, which will remain a mobile app feature only.

“Most of the operators today offer missed call notification/alert services which sends an SMS with the phone number and time for missed calls. The problem is that customers won't return the call since they don't recognize the phone number. By identifying the phone numbers and sending the name of the caller matching the phone number, will add value for the customers. This will also increase the number of returned calls to generate revenue for the operator,”
says Mamedi.

The global phone directory’s API could also be used by trades such as caller ID for cloud telephone solutions, customer service, ID verification when signing up to apply for accounts, loans and credit services, and much more. Release dates of the official API are in the near future and companies are advised to fill out an application form here to start the screening process: http://www.truecaller.com/truecaller-api
