Classicists explore Virgil and his world

Last week a small group of six, 6.2 classicists visited London to listen to a range of speakers with differing opinions based on ‘Virgil and his world’. The lectures commenced with Richard Jenkyns from the University of Oxford talking about ‘Heroism in the Iliad and the Aeneid’. We then had various speakers from Oxford and Cambridge talking to us about aspects of our course such as ‘Virgil and Augustus’, ‘The end of the Aeneid’ and ‘Dido and Aeneas’. All together the lectures were a success especially as we heard some controversial views on the character of Dido, and some interesting opinions on the end of the Aeneid which gave us pause for thought.
