BeyonDSL Satellite Broadband featured at NextGen10 Workshop
BeyonDSL was invited to give a workshop about the rôle of satellites in next generation access (NGA) at the recent NextGen10 conference organised by INCA, the Independent Networks Co‑operative Association.
It is becoming more widely recognised that satellite broadband is an essential part of the technology mix to bring acceptable broadband throughout the UK. But for those of us in the satellite data delivery business, this is not exactly a surprise as our industry has been doing just this for hard-to-reach locations for decades.
The presentation explores some of the historical generations of satellite technology, summarises current capabilities and takes a look at what should be possible within the next few years: up to the government’s 2015 target of Universal Service Commitment allied with Next Generation Access.
Hence the title: “Satellites have Generations, Too”.
Satellite systems are now consumer-priced and easy-to-install. They can be installed quickly at any site with a clear view of the southern sky no matter how far that site is from a terrestrial network. No expensive backhaul is required as this is included in the cost of the service: current offering includes up to 4Mbps for £24.99 per month. Future services should rise to Next Generation speeds by the government’s 2015 target.
The presentation can be downloaded from the INCA site.
Satellite’s rôle in broadband for the UK is further explored in December 10’s BIS Report “Britain’s Superfast Broadband Future”.
Note:
BeyonDSL can still (as long as the weather permits) take orders and get people connected before Christmas 2010. Details of the current Winter Sale offers are here
