Social media has seen a dramatic rise in comparison culture. People detail their whole lives via an online platform, and it can be hard not to compare. Ms Zadran argues that comparison can be counterproductive. The business owner has revealed why it’s important for people to be their own benchmark.

1. It can be demoralising

‘Seeing people achieve success if you are standing still or failing to reach the heights you desire can be demoralising. This can result in a lack of motivation and desire,’ stated Ms Zadran. The business owner believes that comparisons are detrimental and that people need to focus on their own journey.

2. Everyone has their own definition of success

Everyone has their own definition of success. Therefore, comparing is disadvantageous. People with smaller goals are inevitably going to achieve those faster.

3. Authenticity

People only publicise their victories. Individuals rarely highlight their failures; therefore people are not always authentic. Immensus Associates argues that behind every success will be a failure that few people will know about.

When speaking about her journey to becoming a business owner, Ms Zadran commented,

‘There are immeasurable things that I’ve learned, but I am most proud of my ability to be able to develop & coach people, and the ability to keep my head down without comparing myself to anyone else. This has pushed me to perform way above average, stay in my own lane and focus on my own actions.’
