Bike thefts across Bury

Over the past three months over 40 pedal cycles have been stolen across Bury during the night, from sheds and garages. The main areas being targeted are Bury West, Tottington, Walshaw, Radcliffe and Prestwich.

Bury Police are urging the pubic to check how secure their bikes are to try and stop the thieves from riding off with some very expensive bikes including Cube, Orange, Sainta Cruz and Specialized.

Gaynor Mason, Crime Reduction Specialist, stated: "If you have an expensive bike it's more likely to be targeted by thieves. A few easy steps can help to stop them.'

* Don't leave your bike unattended and insecure outside your house

* If possible put your bike in the house or in a building that is alarmed

* Ensure bikes are locked to an anchor point in your shed or garage . Use a good quality lock that been tested to withstand attack go to the 'Sold Secure' website www.soldsecure.com

* Mark your bike using a permanent dye or etching, check out Selecta Mark website at www.bikeregister.com 

* You can register the make, model and serial number of your bike for free at www.imobiliser.com a national police database that can help police recover stolen bikes and return them to their rightful owners.

* Take a photograph of your bike and keep it in a safe place to assist in identification, should it be stolen.
