Bronze awards for Bury People First

Members of Bury People First have been celebrating winning the Bronze award in the Mencap Active Project.

Bury People First is a self advocacy group of local residents who have learning disabilities.

They had to complete five elements: taking part in one hobby, taking up a volunteering opportunity in the community, researching and taking part in two fitness activities, taking part in two lifestyle activities such as healthy eating, and planning and taking part in a personal challenge.

They were presented with certificates by Linda Jackson, assistant director (operations) in Adult Care. She said: “This is a great achievement, and has taken real determination and a lot of team work, including the support of carers and parents. They have shown how, with the right attitude, people can overcome barriers and set goals to improve their lives.”

The successful members were: Catherine Mercer, Katy Furnival, Michelle Holmes, Angela Simpson, Bernie Gaffney, June Wilson, Mandy Rigby, Christopher Blunt, Gwyn Jones, Peter Lenord, Sean O'Keefe, Alex Duthie, Anna Wilkinson, Sabiya Ayyub, Mark Openshaw, Darren Cloudsdale, Tahira Ahmed, Karen Macdonald, Stephen Owen, and Phil Sykes.
