Bury homes brought back into use after years left empty

Bury Council and Six Town Housing have successfully bid for government funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to bring empty properties back into use around Bury.

Various estates across the borough have properties that are left empty and in some cases this can lead to houses falling into disrepair and becoming a problem for neighbours and the community. In addition, there is a high demand for affordable housing in Bury, whilst a number of privately owned properties are left empty.

As a result, Six Town Housing has so far purchased properties in Prestwich and Radcliffe that fit certain criteria such as having been left empty for two or more years. Six Town Housing are now refurbishing these properties which will be offered at “affordable rent” (80% of the market rent) and with access to funding for a total of three years, will look for other empty properties to purchase and refurbish.

Refurbishments on the first four empty properties purchased will be made before the end of March 2013 and will include energy efficiency measures such as draft proof doors and double glazed windows.

Paul Webb, manager of sustainability and investment at Six Town Housing, said: “It seems such a waste when there is a high demand for affordable homes, while some properties are left empty and can sometimes become a bit of an eyesore. Securing the funding to carry out this project is a great step forward and will make a big difference to the estates affected. We are hoping to continue the good work over the next three years across Bury.”

Councillor Gill Campbell, cabinet member for neighbourhoods and regeneration, said: “There are many properties left empty in Bury that would make good affordable homes and it is excellent news that this funding has been secured. Bringing empty properties back into use not only creates more housing opportunities but also helps to improve those neighbourhoods. This scheme is joint working at its best and I look forward to future schemes being developed to bring more homes back into use.”

The estates in question include Sherbourne Court (Prestwich) and Hollinhurst, Outwood, and St Andrews (Radcliffe)
