Golfers back mayor’s charity day

Local charities are £800 better off thanks to those who took part in the Mayor of Bury’s charity golf day.

Bury Council employees, business partners and suppliers took to the fairways for the 24th annual competition.

The tournament was hosted by Stand Golf Club in Whitefield with 41 players taking part. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Mayor’s charities, Caritas Care, Bury Hurdles and Bury Hospice. 

The mayor, Councilllor Joan Grimshaw, said: “I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the sponsors of this year’s event, to Stand Golf Club for very kindly allowing us to use their course and to all the local businesses for their generous donations for the raffle. Once again valuable funds have been raised for local charities and a good day of golf was had by all.” 

During the evening, the deputy mayor and mayoress – Cllr Alan Matthews and his wife Betty - attended a presentation dinner where golf prizes were awarded and donated gifts were raffled. 

Prizes were awarded as follows:

Overall Winner’s Trophy – captain of Stand Golf Club, Jeff Clements

Runner-up – Billy Taylor

Ladies winner - Rita Towler

Best Outward Nine – Ian Charnock
Best Inward Nine – Rachel Scholes
Nearest the Pin for the Dave Watt Memorial Trophy – Joanne Redford

Longest Drive - Alan Darby
Prizes for ‘twos’ – (no prizes were won for Twos)

Yellow ball corporate competition - Dave Chapman from Rossendales Ltd

The following companies kindly sponsored the event: Anthony for Hair, AMF Bowling (Bury), The Rock Retail & Leisure, Barista Café Bar, Bury Leisure sports centres, Draxeda Ltd, East Lancashire Railway, Groundwork Landscapes Ltd, Marks and Spencer (The Rock, Bury), National Cycling Centre, P J Carney & Company Ltd, Regent Therapy Centre, Slattery’s, Spectra Security Ltd, Terberg Matec UK Ltd and The Met. Raffle prizes were also generously donated by a variety of organisations.
