Record results in Bury primary schools

Pupils at Bury’s primary schools are celebrating after notching up the borough’s best ever results in national tests.

Official Government league tables show that local youngsters have surpassed all previous achievements in the Key Stage 2 tests, taken just before they move up to secondary school.

In Bury, 80% of pupils achieved Level 4 or better in English and mathematics, an increase of 2% from 2011. These are the best results ever achieved, and 1% better than the national average.

Figures also show the progress that pupils have made from the end of KS1 (Year 2) to the end of KS2 (Year 6). In English, 90% of Bury children made at least the expected progress of two levels between those years, again 1% above the national rate. In maths too, 90% made the expected two levels of progress and this is 3% above average.

The tables also include the performance of disadvantaged pupils who are receiving support through the Government’s Pupil Premium. Some 66% of them gained Level 4 or better in English and maths, which is 6% up on last year and shows they are catching up with their peers.

Missing from the tables are the results for pupils with special needs who attend Millwood Primary Special School. However, for the Year 6 children at Millwood, when taking into account their attainment, progress and particular needs, 40% of pupils were judged to have outstanding achievement, 40% to have good achievement, and 20% to have satisfactory achievement.

Councillor Nick Parnell, cabinet member for children and families, said: "Results in Bury continue to improve, which shows how high the quality of education is in this borough. Our young students are on the right path to future success as they head off to 'big school' and beyond.

“Staff and pupils at all Bury’s primary schools are to be congratulated for this excellent set of results.”
