The Magnificent Seven Mayors!

Press release -

The Magnificent Seven Mayors!

Girl power has well and truly taken over the chains of civic office across Greater Manchester.

For the first time, seven of the area’s ten mayors are women – and they have already been dubbed the “Magnificent Seven”.

The seven all met last night (Tuesday 2 April) at the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s Civic Dinner, held at Manchester Town Hall.

Bury’s own “first citizen”, Councillor Joan Grimshaw, was joined by Cllr Elaine Boyes (Manchester), Cllr Olwen Chadderton (Oldham), Cllr Wendy Meikle (Stockport), Cllr Brenda Warrington (Tameside), Cllr Patricia Young (Trafford) and Cllr Myra Whiteside (Wigan). The conurbation’s remaining three male mayors were also at the dinner.

Cllr Grimshaw said: “It just goes to show – we women can do anything these days, and we’re all really proud to represent our boroughs at the highest level. All we need now is Bolton, Salford and Rochdale to join us and we’ll have the full set!”
