Press release -

BRYNTEG SCHOOL VIEWS LOCAL BUSINESS PRACTICE

The one-day event was organised by the Mid-Glamorgan Education Business Partnership, an organisation that builds links between local schools and businesses.

John Smith and Emma Thomas from Buy As You View attended the session and presented to the Year 7 class about how the business operates, the various roles within the business such as customer services, HR and finance as well as discussing the skills needed to join the Buy As You View team.

Following the presentation the class were asked to get into groups and discuss what they had learned and then present it back to John, their teacher, Craig Wade, and Hannah Stephens from the Mid-Glamorgan Education Business Partnership.

The class were encouraged to be creative when presenting their ideas and were provided with poster paper and art supplies. The presentations give the pupils the opportunity to practice their presenting skills to build confidence and public speaking abilities.

John Smith said: “I was really impressed with the calibre of the presentations as the class really showed that they understood how Buy As You View works. The exercise tested their interpersonal skills including listening, problem solving, speaking and presentation abilities, all of which would come in handy if they wanted to join our Bridgend team in the future.

“The exercise has real value and as a company which has strong community links, we will continue to work with the Education Business Partnership to deliver more presentations of this kind in the future.”

As a reward for the excellent presentations, Buy As You View donated a digital camera which can be used by the entire year group to capture their events throughout the term and beyond.

Hannah Stephens from the Mid-Glamorgan Education Business Partnership adds:

“We deliver this kind of event at all 43 comprehensive schools in the Mid-Glamorgan area and find that pupils benefit from not only learning about local businesses but also in terms of gaining confidence from speaking in front of their teachers and peers. Although the world of work is a long way away for Year 7 students, this gives them the opportunity to start thinking about careers and what options are open to them.”

Buy As You View was founded in Bridgend in 1972 and currently operates in Wales, Yorkshire, the North West, North East, Midlands and Scotland. The company has 800 members of staff throughout the UK, 250 of which are based in South Wales.

The Education Business Partnership is funded by Careers Wales Mid-Glamorgan and Powys.

Notes to editors

Buy As You View (BAYV) is a retail and consumer finance company, selling a range of electrical goods and furniture for the home. It provides a coinmeter repayment and credit facility for a personal, convenient and manageable way to finance and plan purchases. Products are bought on a hire-purchase weekly-payment basis with no deposit and no credit checks.

Customers pay weekly for their products through the coinmeter which is linked to their television. Account managers visit customers on a regular basis to empty meters and offer after-sales customer care. BAYV is a responsible lender and, before offering credit, run through a full evaluation of affordability with each customer.

BAYV was established in 1972 in South Wales, initially operating out of a single Rhondda valley shop with a direct sales team. The company grew and later expanded throughout the whole of South Wales with an extensive team of account managers servicing customers throughout the region.  In 1999, BAYV embarked upon a UK expansion programme and now operates in the North East, Yorkshire, the Midlands, the North West and Scotland. The business employs 700 staff nationally and its customer base has almost tripled to nearly 100,000.

By offering top quality branded products, first class maintenance and after-sales support, it has become a leading retailer of domestic electrical products.

BAYV strongly supports responsible lending and treating customers fairly wanting to enable its customers to make purchases for their homes without creating additional financial problems. A significant number of BAYV’s new customers are as a result of recommendations from its existing customer base (41%). This is seen as testament to the satisfaction that the products, payment method and service delivered to its customers. It is in the company’s interest not to overburden its customers financially.  BAYV wants its customers' experience of Buy As You View to be positive and for it to be 'the manageable way to buy things for their home'.

BAYV is a forward thinking customer-oriented company with ambitious plans to dominate the sector and become a significant player in the retail and consumer finance market in the UK through controlled profitable growth.
