To think that a photocopier launched over three years ago can match its replacement’s performance and even better it on some fronts, is truly astonishing. The New Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 Photocopier Series - Some Clear Improvements….

One major improvement just looking at the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 photocopier series is the better user interfaces. On all four photocopiers, the C2020i, C2020L, C2030i and C2030L, there is now a higher resolution touch-screen screen, with a customizable display with large, highly visible icons. A ‘Quick Menu’ button enables simple access to frequently-performed user jobs and personalised workflows.

The new Canon imageRUNNER Advance platform provides seamless integration for Canon applications as well as other major third party applications. Adobe Reader Extension capabilities and the option of sending compressed PDF files (not available on the IRC2380i) enable documents to be shared and reviewed electronically.

In terms of printing quality, the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 photocopier series does provide improvements. The oil-free PQ toner system produces vibrant, glossier colour as well as crisp black and white graphics.

Canon’s new Security and Cost-Control Pack (SCCP) on the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 photocopier series is able to promote greater cost awareness among users and provides organisations and their administrators with all the tools to significantly reduce print costs. Every time that a user presents him/herself at a photocopier, total print costs and statistics such as colour usage can be displayed. Even custom messages to encourage black and white, N-up (more than one page of a document being printed on a single page) and duplexing can be displayed when users login to the photocopiers. For administrators, details of all costs are recorded enabling them to pull-up reports showing usage for each user or department.

As far as new security features are concerned, there are some other important changes on the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 photocopier series. As well as controlled access via user ID and secure-print, which was also supported on the Canon IRC2380i photocopiers, the Canon imageRUNNER Advance photocopier series offers an optional IPSec Board – which allows data to be transmitted across the network using the IP security protocol, ensuring that network traffic cannot be read by third parties. As well as the hard disk encryption options that were also optional with the Canon IRC2380i photocopier, ‘i’ models in the C2000 series provide removable flash drives which can be stored safely in separate locations if that’s required and also data erase options, so peace of mind as far as device security is concerned is absolutely guaranteed.

As well as reducing demands in terms of energy consumption, the imageRUNNER Advance photocopiers require less space. Standard photocopier dimensions (that’s without the DADF) are 565*650*791, compared with 565*760*791 on the IRC 2380i photocopier.

The Best of Old – the Canon imageRUNNER C2380i Photocopier – Incredible Features and Productivity

So it’s quite clear that for cutting-edge quality colour production and scanning at the small-medium workgroup or office level, the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 series represents the very best of what is available today. But as the introduction intimated, on many areas of performance, the photocopier that the C2000 photocopier series is replacing, the IRC2380i, doesn’t seem to come out any the worse for comparison.

One important requirement for most workgroup printing scenarios is high paper capacity. On the new Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 photocopiers, the maximum paper capacity is 2000 sheets, based on an 80gsm paper thickness. The Canon IRC2380i photocopier offers over double that paper capacity with space on board for up to 4950 sheets, also based on 80gsm paper thickness. For environments in which regular refills by a member of staff may not always be possible, such a large paper capacity as featured on the Canon IRC2380i photocopier would certainly be a big attraction.

And on many other areas of performance it’s difficult to separate the devices. Media handling is more-or-less identical, both the Canon IRC2380i photocopier and the new Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 photocopiers offer cassette handling for A3 to A5R and stack bypass handling for media between SRA3 and A5R. As far as paper weights are concerned, it’s a similar story. Between cassettes and the stack bypasses, weights of between 64 and 220gsm can be accommodated.

Reading resolutions on the devices are the same – that’s 600dpi. First-copy times on the photocopiers are the same again – 5.9 for black-and-white and 8.9 for colour. And much-vaunted though the new lower temperature fusing PQ printing technology on the imageRUNNER Advance has been, the Canon IRC2380i photocopier offers very similar warm-up times. Warm-up on the C2000 devices is stated at below 38 seconds, whereas the Canon IRC2380i photocopier specifications quote a warm-up time of 38 seconds.

Onto scanning functionality and again, it’s more-or-less a mirror image of performance across device ranges. Maximum scanning speeds for A4 (colour or black and white) at 300dpi are 44ipm on both the Canon IRC2380i and the Canon imageRUNNER Advance photocopiers. And at 600dpi, both devices can achieve 30ipm.

Obviously, in terms of copying and print speeds, some of the new Canon imageRUNNER Advance photocopier models are quicker than the outgoing Canon IRC2380i which aimed to provide copying and printing in A4 at 23ppm. Both the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2030i and the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2030L photocopiers exceed the IRC2380i’s copy and print speeds. But not by any significant margin… As BLI discovered in their testing of the Canon IRC2380i when it was released, the photocopier consistently exceeds its quoted 23ppm speeds, achieving something more along the lines of 25ppm, so even a comparison between print/copy speeds on the photocopiers doesn’t present the Canon IRC2380i in a bad light.

It’s clear the new Canon imageRUNNER Advance photocopier series brings with it some major improvements on previous models. In particular, on areas such as security, user access and the environment, the Canon imageRUNNER Advance series is clearly a step ahead of the game. But when it comes to many features such as media handling, scanning specifications and paper thickness handling, the outgoing Canon IRC2380i photocopier seems equally well-equipped. On paper capacity in particular, the Canon IRC2380i boasts over double the space on board with room for 4950 sheets, as opposed to a maximum paper capacity of 2000 on the Canon imageRUNNER Advance C2000 models. The improvements which the Canon imageRUNNER Advance platform has been able to bring to the small-medium sized workgroup/office category with this C2000 are undoubtedly impressive and very worthwhile – better access, better security and better environmental credentials are certainly important – but for organisations currently searching for a device which delivers on the basic criteria of multifunction printer performance, the outgoing Canon IRC2380i photocopier, currently at its lowest price ever, is possibly an ideal solution. Either way, the strength of both devices demonstrates Canon’s ongoing ascendancy when it comes to photocopiers technology.
