Press release -
European energy-efficient lighting market to achieve sales of 2.5 billion units
The European energy-efficient lighting (EEL) market has been forecast to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.5% through to 2020, to achieve market sales of 2.5 billion units.
Growth within the industry is likely to be fuelled by government efforts to save energy and reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
Furthermore, key factors that are influencing the market for EEL in Europe include: trends in energy codes, rebate and subsidy programs, sustainability/green certifications, and raw material supply issues.
The European lighting industry is currently in a stage of transition, as incandescent lamps and halogen lamps are due to be phased out and replaced by new technologies.
The EU governments plans to phase out incandescent lamps by September 2012, and the proposal to phase out halogen lamps by September 2016, governments and media agencies in the EU are working towards successfully phasing out incandescent lamps and promoting alternative lighting.
The European EEL market is made up of four major lighting technologies which are, Compact Fluorescent Lamps, Halogen Lamps, High Intensity Discharge Lamps and Light Emitting Diode Lamps.
Compact Fluorescent Lamps are the most cost-effective and efficient form of lighting, and several governments have provided incentives for energy-efficient CFLs, even distributing some for free.
High-Intensity Discharge lamps are gaining momentum in street lighting applications, and Light-emitting Diodes and Organic Light-emitting Diodes are also evolving to be an extremely energy-efficient lighting option.
