Press release -

UK battery market controlled by Duracell, Panasonic and Energizer

Demand within the UK battery market increased by approximately 4% per annum over 2006-2012, to reach a market value of £937 million.

After a period of strong growth over 2006-2007, the UK market batteries experienced a slowdown, along with the global economic recession and collapsing domestic car industry.

Historically, around 15% of all batteries on the UK market were purchased by local automotive companies: the car industry was the largest B2B buyer, and its spending on market products grew in line with increasing UK demand for new vehicles.

It is estimated that there are 35 million households in the UK that use batteries with a spend of approx £105 each per year. The average household uses approx 20-30 batteries per year and this is continuing to increase.

The UK battery market is undergoing consolidation. Since 2006, the number of active companies has fallen by 74% to only 44 enterprises in 2012, while total industry earnings improved by 17%.

As a result the turnover-per-company ratio soared from just over £2 million in 2006 to more than £9.6 million in 2012, and the three largest enterprises captured almost 66% of all national revenue.

The UK battery market is dominated by a small number of manufacturers with Duracell, Panasonic and Energizer the most notable.

Smaller manufacturers have largely been unable to establish themselves in the consumer market because of competitive rivalry and the importance of distribution agreements with major retailers.

As a result, those on the margins of the market typically specialise in dealing with particular customers/appliances or offering specific battery technology such as rechargeable or button cells.

A notable development within the market in recent years has been the growing profile of own-label batteries, sales of which are particularly benefiting from changing shopping habits.
