COSTA COFFEE PROUD TO BE SUPPORTING PROJECT WATERFALL

  • Costa Coffee has confirmed it will be donating 20p for every sale of its Peruvian Character Roast to Project Waterfall

17th April 2018, LONDON: For the third year, Costa Coffee will be supporting Project Waterfall, the UK Coffee Week charity, by donating 20p for every sale of Costa Coffee’s current Peruvian Character Roast*.

The nationwide activity will run between 16th and 22nd April, Costa Coffee will be fundraising for a target donation of £50,000 to Project Waterfall.

Project Waterfall is a charity initiative established by The Allegra Foundation to bring clean, safe drinking water, sanitation and education to coffee growing communities. Since 2011, the initiative has raised over £800,000 and bought clean drinking water to over 27,000 people across seven countries.

Many of these Project Waterfall communities are also supported by the Costa Foundation, an independent charity supported by Costa Coffee, which aims to improve the life chances of boys and girls in coffee growing communities by providing the opportunity of a safe, quality education.

Coffee is Uganda's top-earning export crop, and plays a significant role in rural Uganda. Northern Uganda is currently recovering from nearly two decades of civil war, where 1.6 million people were internally displaced. Access to clean water and sanitation is still a challenge for these communities. Project Waterfall began working in Uganda in 2016 with The Costa Foundation, which built and maintained 12 schools in coffee growing communities across the country. Project Waterfall will be working with the Costa Foundation to implement clean water facilities in the high schools which have been funded in south west Uganda.

Sandy Gourlay, Costa Coffee Charity and Community Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting Project Waterfall again this year during UK Coffee Week and are really pleased to be able to offer a donation from our Peruvian Character Roast. For the third year running, the Costa Foundation will be working as a delivery partner for Project Waterfall, providing clean water to coffee growing communities. I’ve seen first hand the impact of this collaboration and the difference it is making to coffee farmers and their families.”

The UK Coffee Week Team said: “UK Coffee Week is incredibly proud to have the support of Costa Coffee for another consecutive year, all raising valuable funds for Project Waterfall in partnership with the Costa Foundation. We are excited to try out their Peruvian Character Roast, and are looking forward to seeing the incredible impact their donation will make to the lives of coffee growing communities through Project Waterfall and The Costa Foundation.”

Looking after coffee growers is extremely important to us, which is why we established The Costa Foundation, a registered charity with the aim to relieve poverty, advance education and the health and environment of coffee-growing communities around the world. So far, The Costa Foundation has funded the building of 75 schools and improved the social and economic welfare of coffee-growing communities.
