What is happening in the UK Group buying hemisphere?

We already know that Groupola (http://groupola.co.uk), one of the first UK Groupon clones, has ceased offering any deals, whilst companies like Likebees or Snippa were going dry before they even started.

So, what’s happening now? Let’s start with the usual suspects:

Groupon (http://goo.gl/0LeHf) is still leading the pack with an amazing increase in the number of deals, marketing initiatives and partners, plus 6 deal sites based in the biggest cities.

Living Social, (http://livingsocial.com), the big Groupon threat from the USA, received $175 million from Amazon and changed their strategy in the UK, getting rid of aggregators and some of their affiliate partners who they saw as competitors.

Keynoir (http://keynoir.com), a private members group-buying page, is on its way to extinction. Obviously the $1.74 m funding from ProFounders did not cover the whole year. Maybe the management should take a look at Groupalia in Spain who just secured $5 million after their $1.3 million round in March 2010 and learn from them. Or linking-up with Goodypass (www.goodypass.com) could be another possibility, although it’s a bit quite there behind the shining celebrity curtains.

Wahanda,( http://goo.gl/o2C3p ) the Amazon of wellness, is still doing well having expanded in Europe & the USA. Featuring their partners in an obligatory 2-3x times mobdeal per year, it’s a well thought out model.

KGB UK (http://goo.gl/m7jcY) were one of the first players on the market and they’re still holding a good position, increasing their deals in every major city.

Wowcher (http://www.wowcher.co.uk/) started mostly with London or nationwide deals; however, they’ve started to expand to New York & Chicago. Wowcher made a smart move when they partnered with http://www.visitlondon.com/, one of the No1 pages for everything in & out of London

Crowdity (http://goo.gl/UNCny) only offers deals in London and is one of the smallest players in London.
Kahootz (http://goo.gl/szAu5 ) launched in May 2010 offering live deals in Leeds and the surrounding areas.

And now we get to the fresh  blood:

Tickles (http://www.tickles.co/) is a platform that launched in August/ September 2010 and focuses on sales in Cambridge and the surrounding areas.

Glamoo (http://glamoo.com) is a mixed platform of group buying deals, cash back approaches and loyalty passes. It has a magazine called “the glamoo paper” and is present in 4 major cities.

Localdailydeals (http://localdailydeals.co.uk) launched at the beginning of January and started with their home town Brighton. It stands a good chance in the market as the team seems to be highly motivated, plus with a new smartphone approach sales could increase and catapult them to the next stage.

Travelzoo UK (http://www.travelzoo.com/uk/local-deals/) are not new in the group buying hemisphere but started recently in the UK. Already they outperform everything within the Groupon franchise due to their incredibly big subscriber base.

Gruupy ( http://www.groupy.com), the Ireland-based group buying site for gadget fans, should have officially launched on the 11th November 2010  in the UK. Unfortunately we can’t find any info on their site about any UK City!

Upcoming players in 2011

Dailydeals (Dailydeals.co.uk), the big competitor of Groupon in Germany, is making plans to launch in the UK this spring.

Gogroopie  (http://www.gogroopie.com/) is soon planning to enter the UK in 5 major cities.

Coupobox’s 2011 Prediction

We’ll see a lot group buying pages with different approaches coming to the UK from other European cities, like Biodeals from Germany which focuses only on organic deals.

Daily Deal Credit Cards will arrive.

We have seen this already with Glamoo, who offer members loyalty passes using points or similar.
Daily Deals will go self serve,
Groupon 2.0 started already in the USA and will kick off in the UK & Europe very soon. Merchants can run deals at their leisure by themselves.

Coupox is an aggregator of local dailydeals. Their website focuses on customer interaction and lets consumers filter their preferred deals in a few seconds. Consumers can compare live deals, read reviews and rate previous deals.

Coupobox promotes its partners by quickly entering dynamic European markets due to a wide range of internal networks and links in different media. Check out our UK page at http://coupobox.co.uk and our German page at http://coupobox.de. Coupobox will launch at the end of January in Austria and has plans to launch in Switzerland and the Netherlands.
