What if your thyroid gland is not functioning properly?
Proper functioning of the thyroid gland is essential for the well-being of our body; a slowdown of its function (hypothyroidism) can be one of the causes of weight gain.

Iodine and thyroid: recommended doses in case of supplementation
If the thyroid has been removed, it is necessary to take, under medical supervision, the synthetic thyroid hormone (one could not live without the thyroid gland).
On the contrary, if the same is still in place, one can suggest to enrich the diet with seaweeds or use a supplement containing these substances (inherently, always under close medical supervision). Fucus vesiculosus, for example, is a seaweed extremely rich in natural iodine and represents a valid alternative for supplementing this substance.
But, what is the maximum amount of iodine that can be taken daily?
It is for the Ministry of Health to establish the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) and maximum contributions of a substance allowed in food supplements; in the case of iodine, the RDA is 150 mcg, while the maximum permissible dose is 225 mcg.
Many consumers mistakenly think that the maximum permissible dose for a substance coincides with 100% RDA. In fact, the RDA indicates the dose needed to meet the minimum daily requirements of our body, in order to avoid incurring serious health nutritional deficiencies. So, the RDA, as opposed to common beliefs, is the minimum dose that must be taken daily.
