Steve Elworthy to leave ECB to become Chief Executive of Surrey County Cricket Club

Surrey County Cricket Club has today announced that the ECB’s Managing Director of Events & Special Projects, Steve Elworthy MBE, has been appointed as the county’s new Chief Executive.

Following the announcement, Tom Harrison, ECB Chief Executive Officer, said:

“Steve has done so much in his time at the ECB, we’ll miss him hugely. He has played a huge part in the development of cricket in England and Wales over so many years, including the success of major events like the ICC Women’s and Men’s Cricket World Cups in 2017 and 2019 and The Hundred this year.

“Over the past 18 months his work has been crucial in enabling us to play cricket through the Pandemic. He has a vast knowledge and understanding of cricket in this country and internationally, and is a man of great integrity who cares passionately about the game.

“Steve has been a good and trusted friend and while I am very sad he will be leaving, I am delighted for him personally. Surrey is a great club, they deserve the very best and in Steve they have it."

Steve joined the ECB in 2008, initially to head up the ICC World Twenty20 2009 after successfully leading the inaugural edition of the tournament in South Africa in 2007. He was appointed Director of Marketing and Communications in 2010 before taking on a new role as the ECB’s Director of Global Events in 2013 and was later appointed Managing Director of the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Most recently he played a key role in the sport navigating a way through the pandemic to ensure elite cricket could be played in a safe environment.
