Esch2022 offers a full programme at the SKIP

The SKIP is a space of the European Capital of Culture dedicated to young audiences, offering children, young people and adults, who are interested in the digital arts, a vast range of activities. In this sunflower yellow, gently undulating venue, several artists' collectives invite you to explore the digital world through recreational workshops, interactive concerts and other special events, often in conjunction with exhibitions at the Massenoire and the Möllerei in the university district of Esch-Belval.

« In order to draw the attention of both the young and adult public to digital science and technology, Esch2022 launched the SKIP as a place where they could learn more about these. This meeting place hosts workshops, concerts and exhibitions in conjunction with those in Esch-Belval and offers a welcoming space full of objects, books and games about the arrival of the digital world in today's societies. During the European Capital of Culture season, the SKIP is the place that offers everyone opportunities for exchange, dialogue and further learning », says Françoise Poos, Cultural Programme Director at Esch2022.

Throughout March 2022 up to and including April 3rd, Luxembourg and French school children enjoyed the musical workshops during the « Festival 24 H Electro for Kids ». These workshops, intended for children from the age of 4 and older were run by DJ Brave and focused on discovering amplified and electronic sounds. They also explored the brand new interactive installation called « the MACHINES », a group of five futuristic machines that look like a space cockpit. It allows children to discover various musical phenomenons and to create music and sounds for the future. The 24H Electro for Kids festival closes with a concert by the Kogümi collective in the Club de la Rockhal (03.04.2022, 15:00).

A varied programme also in April and May

In April and May the SKIP will be hosting the French Freesson collective. These artists will offer workshops open to children during the week and to the general public during the weekend. Other numerous planned activities include the art of light painting. During the « Night of Culture » event in Esch-Belval on 09/04, artists Cleps and Etsi will demonstrate this photographic technique that creates images by moving light sources through dark space and capturing these movements through long exposure times. The resulting photographs are full of colour and energy (For a full list of these events, see Esch2022.lu).

At the end of April, Jankenpopp's « Voxel » workshops will introduce local geeks to the art of using voxels, or 3D pixels (or « cubes ») to portray regional buildings which can then be viewed from all angles, as in the famous video game Minecraft.

To conclude the first half of the year, WIDE (Women in Digital Empowerment) will be offering two workshops to adults who would like to acquire newskills or perfect them. One will focus on coding and will offer an introduction to the theory and the practice of basic programming languages (HTML, CSS etc) and the other will explore Word Press and its CMS (contents management system) tool. Finally, throughout the year and alongside exhibitions at the Massenoire and the Möllerei, the Public Team will offer various types of visits : visitors will be able to book private visits for adults or young people, join free visits during the weekends, visits to the Generations BD exhibition, join in story telling walks for the little ones, or « Kontscht ouni Alter » for senior citizens. Each of these events offers you the opportunity to experience something truly original.

Mäi Kulturjoer Esch2002 (My Year of Culture Year in Esch) : Esch2022, or the opportunity to introduce primary school children to culture.

On the occasion of the launch of the European Capital of Culture season, the SKIP published a book « Mäi KulturjoerEsch2022 », together with those in charge of Esch2022. The book is meant to be used by children, teachers and parents. It is a cultural diary of Esch2022 events intended for a young readership and audience : plays, concerts, dance shows, exhibitions etc. This album is a unique opportunity for celebrating culture in the South of the country in all its diversity.

This cultural album allows each pupil to put together his or her own « cultural year » and to decide in which events he or she wishes to participate. The child can then create a record of its own impressions of these events, through drawings, photos, collages, or texts. The album is intended to be used by children aged 7 to 11, and in particular school children in the South of the country. Of course, children elsewhere in Luxemburg can order their own copy of it. (Ordering contact for teachers at the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth: Marilyne.GROSSKLOS@men.lu)

More than 2000 events will be taking place in the South of Luxemburg and in neighbouring France in 2022. These events include concerts, exhibitions, gastronomic events, shows, workshops and 50% of the planned events for Esch2022 have been conceived specifically for children and young people. To not miss out on the information, potential guests are welcome to subscribe to the « Gazette d'Esch2022 ».

They can chose to receive a monthly bulletin with a selection of programmes by subscribing to Esch2022`s newspaper « la Gazette ». Or they can opt for the weekly « la Gazette-agenda» (digital).
