‘Esvagt Aurora’ on the Discovery Channel

The ESVAGT winter specialist is part of a series of theme programmes on extreme constructions on the Discovery Channel

’The best of the best’ is not what ESVAGT calls itself.

Of course the company is pleased with its vessels but to mention them as ’ultimate, massive ships’ is not what the company is known for doing.

But the Discovery Channel has done both. The series ‘Ultimate, Massive Ships’ that the channel has shown puts focus on five fantastic vessel constructions each with its own special competences – and one of the vessels is ‘Esvagt Aurora’.

- We had a journalist and a photographer on board for some days and they worked very hard indeed – in spite of seasickness, says, Ole Ditlev Nielsen, Chief Commercial & Safety Officer in ESVAGT:

- The series describes big constructions and goes for the extreme. They were interested in ESVAGT because we operate in extreme areas, says Ole Ditlev Nielsen.

Strong in manoeuvres

One episode from the ‘Esvagt Aurora’ focused for example on the rescue drills where the crew on the vessel demonstrated that a boat can be launched in 90 seconds and rescue an injured person from the water for treatment in only four and a half minute.

- We demonstrated all that we could, and the crew had a few very busy days. We also demonstrated something that was not included in the final programme – for example our water mist fire fighting system, manoeuvring when it is dark and drills in the night when the vessel’s infra red system will be an important contribution to finding people in the water, says Ole Ditlev Nielsen.

- It was quite entertaining for the crew to be part of all this and it is perfectly OK with us that we were not appointed as the best of the five vessels. In the comparison, we had to be measured on our length and the power of the engine, and for practical reasons this is not where we have to be the sharpest in everyday situations, on the contrary. We had a very high score for manoeuvrability and the ability to cope with very tough environments – and that is the most important thing for us, says Ole Ditlev Nielsen.

Facts

ESVAGT had had a dialogue with the client about the programme. The client accepted to produce the programme on the condition that the client did not appear in the film. This presented both crew and camera people with a number of challenges.
