ESVAGT navigators train in DP operations
Dynamic Positioning (DP) workshop for navigators on ESVAGT’s Service Operation Vessels (SOV) strengthens risk assessments and trains optimal reactions.
There is no room for error when an 80-metre-long vessel needs to come close to a 90-metre-high wind turbine to transfer personnel, equipment and spare parts.
To ensure that navigators react optimally, ESVAGT has run a number of DP Workshops for SOV navigators.
‘DP operations close to wind turbines require skill, knowledge and plenty of experience – rather like most of the other work we do’, says Steffen Rudbech Nielsen, Head of Ship Management - Operation:
‘Constant training is part of ESVAGT’s core, and the workshop will help ensure the quality and safety of our DP operations’, he says.
Learning from each other
‘The workshop focusses on work preparation and the risk assessment that precedes it. It trains the participants in real situations, for example a simulated error in the DP system. Additionally, ESVAGT has chosen to organise the workshop so that it also supports the sharing of the many years of valuable experience that ESVAGT has in DP operations’, says Asger Stürtzel Sørensen, Head of HSE:
‘ESVAGT developed the SOV concept and we probably have more knowledge about SOV operations than any other shipping company in the world. The DP operations experience with wind turbines that we have built up with the 'Esvagt Froude', the 'Esvagt Faraday' and the 'Esvagt Njord', is unique. It also means that ESVAGT's SOV navigators working with DP every day need to learn from each other in order to learn something new,’ says Asger Stürtzel Sørensen.
One of the tasks set for the workshop participants has therefore been to define and work with an ASOG; an Activity Specific Operational Guideline, which will ensure that prime operational experience is shared internally within ESVAGT’s fleet of SOVs.
‘We also want to create a thorough training programme and a standard for risk assessment. The best way for us to do that is to involve our specialists who have a thorough understanding of the job from their everyday work, which are our DP Operators’, says Asger Stürtzel Sørensen.
ESVAGT is a dedicated provider of safety and support at sea and a market leader within offshore wind solutions.
We support the offshore Oil & Gas industries with a wide range of specialized services: Standby, Emergency Response and Rescue Vessels (ERRV), Oil spill response, Firefighting, Tanker assists, Rig moves, Supply services and Interfield transfer of cargo and personnel.
We service offshore wind farms and have a fleet of dedicated Service Operation Vessels (SOV), which ESVAGT pioneered in 2010. The SOVs provide accommodation for technicians, spare time facilities, offices and conference room, storage for small turbine parts, workshops, etc. The SOV offers flexible personnel and equipment transfer capabilities by either Walk-to-Work gangway system or Safe Transfer Boats.
ESVAGT was founded in 1981 and has a fleet of more than 40 vessels and approximately 900 employees on- and offshore.
