Sweden donates thousands of trees to China during Expo 2010
A Swedish company has donated more than 5000 trees to be planted in China’s Minshan Mountains in support of the WWF’s Panda Project. Participating companies and organizations will have the opportunity to donate more trees during World Expo. The initiative comes from the Swedish committee for Expo 2010 and WWF Sweden.
The trees will be planted in the WWF China project in the Minshan Mountains in the Sichuan Province where the Giant Panda lives. The trees are essential in order to restore this area which was severely damaged during the May 2008 earthquake. This project also needs financial support to rebuild the infrastructure that was destroyed. The bio-diversity in this area is unique in the world and it is essential for humans to preserve biodiversity to future generations. Today more and more people are moving into cities all around the world and the needs for natural resources are increasing. This area is unique and consists of coniferous forest with a diverse floor vegetation of bamboo, which is important for many animal populations and species. The mountain sides are covered with deciduous forest and in the valleys rhododendrons grow and paint the landscape in a palette of blue, red and pink when it flowers in the spring. Except for the Giant Panda the area is populated by Black Bear, Brown Bear, Lynx, Clouded Leopard, Thaki, Mountain Sheep and the fantastic Golden Monkey – a species only found in the Panda’s habitat.
It is estimated that the Swedish pavilion will have an average of 15 000 visitors per day during the six months of World Expo and the target is that participating Swedish companies, organisations and other stakeholders will raise funds equivalent to 1 RMB per visitor to the Swedish pavilion, to support WWF’s project in China So far an equivalent of more than 5 000 planted trees have been donated through kind contributions from Alfa Laval.
