Press release -

Reducing fuel duty will save UK household budgets more than £1 billion

To coincide with planned demonstrations calling for Chancellor George Osborne to reduce petrol prices by 5p per litre, Green Flag has calculated the estimated saving for British households if this discount were to be implemented.

Miranda Schunke, spokesperson for Green Flag commented:
“Our analysis reveals the average family would save £40.801 a year if the 5p per litre reduction in fuel duty was to be implemented nationwide.  Cumulatively, British households would save some £1 billion2 a year and for those driving significant distances, such as commuters and people living in rural areas, it could make a significant difference.

This reduction would see the Government matching its recent commitment to remote communities, such as the Isles of Scilly, where the 5p discount has already been implemented.

“Fuel is one of the most significant expenditures for UK families today.  With the Chancellor’s budget fast approaching, we wanted to highlight the impact of any change in fuel duty at a time when household budgets are continuing to be well and truly stretched.”
