Growth for Wizz as 1.3 Million passengers use LLA in April

1,385,849 passengers travelled through London Luton Airport (LLA) in April, a 3.3% increase compared to April 2017 – making it LLA’s busiest-ever April. It was also the 15th consecutive month that over one million passengers have passed through the airport.

As LLA continues to grow, its relationship with its airline partners goes from strength to strength. Wizz Air, which launched a UK subsidiary based at LLA on May 3, introduced a fourth aircraft to its fleet in April and launched the UK’s only low-fare direct flight to Albania. It also announced a further seven new routes from LLA, including to Athens, Tallinn and Reykjavik. The airline will base a total of eight aircraft at LLA this year.

April also saw the commencement of work on the Luton Borough Council funded Direct Air-Rail Transit (DART) project. The rapid transit system will connect Luton Airport Parkway station and the airport terminal and will replace the current shuttle bus. The DART will reduce the journey time to under four minutes, making travelling easier and quicker for passengers.

LLA is also nearing the completion of its £160m transformation, which will increase capacity to 18 million passengers by 2020. As part of the transformation, 18 new retailers have opened at the airport since the start of 2018. As well as being able to choose from a greater variety of shops and restaurants, passengers will have access to more seating. The first of eight new boarding gates has also recently opened.

We welcomed more passengers who were able to enjoy our enhanced retail experience, and we celebrated the launch of new routes from Wizz Air. This month we’re delighted to celebrate with Wizz Air as its UK subsidiary began operations from LLA.”
