Spotlight on... Inspirational Young Person of the Year

A brand-new Award category for 2020 is the next in our series giving you the inside track on each London Sport Award and the groups and people that are in the running.

There’s not long to go until the London Sport Awards 2020 at the Guildhall so here’s all you need to know about Inspirational Young Person of the Year.

Who is in the running?

Inspirational Young Person of the Year rewards an individual 25-years-old or younger who has made a significant impact in the grassroots physical activity and sport sector in London.

Here’s the three individuals in the running to be named inaugural Inspirational Young Person of the Year:

Nahimul Islam

Nahimul launched his own football club at the age of 16, providing resources to young people to get involved with coaching as well as delivering multi-sports programmes to his local community.

The 24-year-old was nominated for the Volunteer of the Year last year and for those that do not want to play sport, he supports their efforts to move into coaching or volunteering.

Finances prevented Nahimul chasing his dream to play football professionally, but he refuses to let that be an issue for the next generation and has launched a girls' team with Satellite Club funding.

Xahir Durant

Xahir, 16, has shown a true commitment to physical activity and sport as a role model in an alternative provision school (Arco Academy) in Southwark.

He took part in work experience as PE teacher developing students' skills with a great attitude to learning and helping others.

Xahir is considered an exceptional role model to other students that have not been provided with as many opportunities in life and his attitude to learn and helping others is described as “exceptional”.

Vanessa Nsilu

Aged 25, Vanessa has been a part of Barking Salvation Army for over 15 years.

During that time, she has fundraised to set up a youth club (at the age of 13), organised residential trips to sporting facilities, like Hindleap Warren Outdoor Centre, and set up a dance class for young people.

She is also the Vice Chair of Barking Sports 4 Change – Model City and hopes to use this platform to bring about change and more community cohesion through the power of sport.

Who’s in the Hall of Fame?

The Inspirational Young Person of the Year is a new Award for 2020 so there are no previous winners in our Hall of Fame. Whoever lifts the trophy at the Guildhall on Friday 6 March will be our first entrant in this Award category.
