Spotlight on... The Children and Young People Award with PlayInnovation

Three days to go. As the London Sport Awards 2020 supported by the City of London Corporation is edging ever closer, we want to put the spotlight on each Award category and the shortlisted nominees.

Today, we’re highlighting The Children and Young People Award in association with PlayInnovation.

Who’s in the running

This Award recognises the magnificent work of individuals and organisations that support and enable young people to form a positive physical activity habit for life.

Hestia’s Family Fitness Project

This project aims to improve the health and fitness levels of children accessing Hestia’s Domestic Abuse and Modern Slavery services, using physical activity as a tool to facilitate the recovery from abuse.

In 2019 Hestia’s Family Fitness Project ran across 12 London boroughs and completed over 100 family fitness sessions.

As well as facilitating sessions, the project also provides equipment and sportswear to the service users so they’re able to be active as a family independently.

Mini Mermaid Running Club

Working with girls aged 7-11 in primary schools and community centres using physical activity combined with mindfulness to strengthen girls’ self-worth and value. Mini Mermaid Running Club works to engage those girls at risk of becoming inactive.

Their goal is not to create ‘runners’ instead, Mini Mermaids work to engage those girls at risk of stopping physical activity, by creating a fun, judgement-free environment in which girls feel safe exploring different types of movement.

Movement Works

Movement Works provides physical activity workshops to target children whose movement and developmental opportunities may be limited through their situation and run programmes to provide specialist support for specific groups of people such as the BAME and Autistic communities.

Movement Works’ mission is to prove that movement matters by supporting those most in need by reason of youth, ill-health, disability or financial hardship to access physical activity opportunities which are fun and educational. 

Fulham Reach Boat Club

Fulham Reach Boat Club was founded in 2014 to expose ‘ordinary Londoners’ to rowing.

They’re attempting to break down social barriers by engaging some of the most deprived young people in London to take part in rowing.

They have now established boat clubs in every one of the twelve state schools within Hammersmith and Fulham – the first time in the UK that a local authority has had every state school take part in rowing.

Fulham Reach Boat Club also have had success in helping efforts to reduce criminal re-offending.

PlayInnovation – Partners to the Children and Young People Award

PlayInnovation is an educational sport and play area company, they’re innovative designs are family inclusive aiming to engage local communities into sport and physical activity.
