5 Things You Need To Know About: Hernö Gin

1. Up until 2018 every single bottle was personally numbered and signed by Jon’s mum!

In 2017 she signed over 60,000 bottles! Luckily Jon’s now taken pity on her and has her writing printed directly onto the label instead.

2. Herno Juniper Cask is the first of its type in the world

Moving away from the typical oak barrels and ex-bourbon casks, Jon decided to try something different when it came to ageing his gin. Manufacturing bespoke casks from the wood of a Juniper tree and resting Hernö gin in them for 30 days, moved from an experiment to a much loved favourite of the core range.

3. In winter the snow can fall up to 2 metres deep

Or high depending on how you look at it! Obviously this can make the gin difficult to get out of the distillery and into our drinks, but luckily the team are all adept with a snow plough and shovels to make sure we don’t go without.

4. The distillery is located in an UNESCO world heritage area

Located in the village of Dala just outside the City of Härnösand in Ångermanland, Sweden, it’s all part of the world heritage area called The High Coast which is celebrated for its natural beauty. The name Hernö actually comes from the geographical heritage of the gin, and the city name of the place that Jon grew up: “Härnösand”. The old spelling of this was “Hernösand” and the city is located on an island “ö” means island in Swedish.

5. Hernö sources only the best botanicals from all over the world to use in their gin

Even a little-known herb called Meadowsweet from the UK has made the cut! Alongside vanilla from Madagascar, Cassia from Indonesia, Black Pepper from India, Fresh Lemon Peel, Coriander Seeds from Belgium, and Juniper Berries from Hungary, Hernö incorporates local Swedish Lingonberries and natural water from an underground well, all beautifully crafted to make the best gin in the world.
