Council to meet with Portglenone community to discuss pitch location

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is to meet with key stakeholders in Portglenone to inform a decision on the location of a new floodlit 3G MUGA pitch and a potential new grass football pitch for the area.

At the request of elected members a consultation took place to further understand the requirements of the community.

The consultation was issued to approximately 900 households and the responses received included a detailed submission from Portglenone Enterprise Group on behalf of the community.

It was identified that the community had a preference for a floodlit 3G MUGA compared to a full size grass football pitch.

The location however was not conclusive and council officers are now making plans to meet with the local community group, a local primary school and elected members.

Following the meetings the results will be collated and an informed decision can be made on the location of the new facilities.

Alderman Tommy Nicholl MBE welcomed the update on the pitch in Portglenone.

“The community are very keen to get this provision in place.

“If the community has access to a state of the art facility then it will undoubtedly contribute to the increasing numbers participating in sport and physical activity.

“A new pitch will act as hub for the community, encouraging more active lifestyle choices and creating a space for groups and teams to come together and socialise through sport.”
