Get your festive feet walking this winter with Mid and East Antrim’s 12 walks of Christmas

We all know how important getting out and about in our open spaces, beaches, parks and even our own neighbourhoods has been to our mental and physical health this year, but are you tired of pounding the same pavements? Then look no further than Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s 12 Walks of Christmas!

This new series running throughout December on our social media channels will showcase videos from a hot to trot list of fabulously festive forest trails, coastlines and parks you can take across the borough this winter.

Walking is not only free, but a great way to explore the fresh air. It’s also a great way to socialise safely in line with current Covid-19 restrictions.

Research has shown that fresh air and getting in touch with nature boosts endorphins and reduces stress. The effects can last for several hours afterwards, with individuals feeling happier and more relaxed.

By fitting walking into your daily routine, you will increase your daily step count, improve your heart health and lower disease risk.

Health benefits aside, being a tourist on your own doorstep is something lockdown has stirred in all of us, so why not use these 12 walks to reignite your wanderlust and see what amazing scenery you have in Mid and East Antrim.

The 12 Walks of Christmas will feature Blackhead Path, Bashfordsland Wood & Oakfield Glen, Carrickfergus Promenade, Woodburn Forest Dam, Cranny Falls, Carnfunnock Country Park, Larne, Drum Wood, Glenoe Waterfall, Galgorm Wood & Maine Riverside Walk, Portglenone Forest and Buttermilk Bridge.

Remember if you are heading out for a walk, leave no trace and take any litter home with you, or use bins where available so the next people to follow in your footsteps can enjoy the same stunning views.

Christmas in Mid and East Antrim will look a little different this year, but council’s packed online programme of seasonal activities for all the family should help it feel as normal as possible.

Rediscover your local area by getting out into the fresh air and why not share your festive fun by tagging #SpiritofMEA in any social media posts which we can share online.

You can find out more about what’s on to get you into the #SpiritofMEA on our website www.midandeastantrim.gov.uk
