Mayor praises football teams as Premiership kicks off

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim has congratulated local football clubs on their efforts to ensure a safe start to the new Danske Bank Premiership season.

Councillor Peter Johnston was speaking as the season kicked off on Friday night past with Ballymena United notching up a victory against Coleraine. Meanwhile, Larne and Carrick Rangers were both in action on Saturday with mixed fortunes against Dungannon Swifts and Linfield respectively.

“Like so many, I am delighted to see the new football season get underway,” he said.

“There is no doubt that this would not have been possible without the tireless efforts and continued hard work of everyone involved in our clubs.

“From the management to the players and the volunteers, it has been their collective effort and determination that means we can once again enjoy that most enjoyable of weekend traditions, local football.

“Despite the many challenges faced in recent months, their attention to detail, strict adherence to social distancing and other safety regulations, and commitment to local communities have made and continue to make a real difference during these times.

“On behalf of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, I extend our sincere thanks to you all and wish you every success for the rest of what promises to be a very entertaining season.”
