MEA Centennial flag raised to mark 100 years of Northern Ireland

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston, has welcomed Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim, David McCorkell KStJ to officially hoist Mid and East Antrim’s Centenary Flag to mark 100 years since the creation of Northern Ireland.

Throughout 2021, Council is hosting a number of events under the #NI100MEA umbrella as part of its Northern Ireland Centennial Programme, which is being co-ordinated by Council’s Centenary Working Group.

Mayor Councillor, Peter Johnston said: “It was great pleasure to welcome the Lord Lieutenant of County Antrim to officially hoist Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s Centenary Flag at the Braid in Ballymena.

“Council will fly the Centenary flag across its three civic buildings, the Braid, Ballymena, Town Hall, Carrickfergus and Smiley Buildings, Larne over the centenary weekend.

“Council’s Northern Ireland Centenary Programme draws upon our industrial heritage, successful businesses, the growth of the economy and tourism industry in Mid and East Antrim. It looks to celebrate the success of our local ambassadors, sporting heroes and global stars, which have put our country on the map.

“It is hoped that through this special programme of activities and events that Council will be a leaving a lasting legacy of this centenary year here in Mid and East Antrim Borough."
