MEABC to look at how best to beat fly tipping

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council (MEABC) is to examine examples of best practice from across the UK as work continues to tackle the issue of fly tipping and littering in the borough.

The decision follows a Notice of Motion, proposed by Cllr Marc Collins and seconded by Cllr Peter Johnston, which was approved by elected members at this month’s meeting of Full Council.

The protection of our local environment and natural heritage is a key focus within Council’s ‘Putting People First’ Community Plan, and officers continue to maintain a zero tolerance approach to fly tipping, littering and dog fouling.

Speaking following the monthly meeting, Cllr Collins said:

“Within the Notice of Motion, I had recommended that Council notes the rise in fly tipping across the borough and recognises the impact that has on our local areas and on the public purse.

“I am pleased that Elected Members have agreed with my proposal that Council Officers will now explore models of best practice from elsewhere in the UK and introduce tougher penalties for offenders, including, but not limited to, the potential for larger fines.

“We should all be aware of the negative financial and environmental effects of fly tipping and while we have been seeing an overall decrease in rural crime, fly tipping appears to be an ever worsening problem.

“I welcome the work undertaken in promoting a zero tolerance approach to this type of behaviour, and the efforts made to keep our borough clean, whilst also recognising the many local volunteers who are undertaking litter picks throughout Mid and East Antrim.

“However, I firmly believe that prevention is better than cure in this issue, so it is important that we can learn from other public bodies as to how they are effectively reducing the amount of waste that is illegally disposed of in their areas.”
