Restoration works approved for Fisherman’s Quay

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has approved remedial works at Fisherman’s Quay, an important historic landmark, in Carrickfergus.

The Fisherman’s Quay has been part of the fabric of Carrickfergus for nearly 200 years.

The improvement works were proposed by Alderman Billy Ashe MBE and was seconded by Councillor Robin Stewart.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Peter Johnston, said: “This is very welcome news for Carrickfergus and excellent to see more investment in our town and borough.

“The quay is regularly used by a group of open water swimmers, which I am a part of, and they are all delighted by this announcement.

“Fisherman’s Quay is a key site for walkers and tourists with stunning views of the castle and lough, especially during the good weather.”

Alderman Ashe, said: “Fisherman’s Quay is an important landmark in the Carrickfergus area and plays a key part in the appearance and attractiveness of the entire landscape.

Councillor Robin Stewart, added: “It is vitally important that we maintain this structure so generations can enjoy it for many years to come.”

Fisherman’s Quay is located approximately 800 metres north east of Carrickfergus Castle, immediately off the Marine Highway.

It dates back to 1831 when it was built for the local fishing community to access boats.

It is no longer used for this purpose, however, it is used for recreational purposes and is designated as a “Scheduled Monument”.

It is used by many for water based recreation and is also very popular with walkers along the promenade.

The work will ensure local people’s recreation opportunities can continue and the potential of an increase in visitor numbers.

The Council’s approach to date has been that all external repairs would be done with limestone and limestone mortar but internal repairs would be carried out with concrete.
