Special Council Meeting hears tributes to HRH Prince Philip and ‘a life well lived’

Tributes have been paid to His Royal Highness, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, during a Special Meeting of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council.

Elected Members observed a moment’s silence at the beginning of the meeting, which took place on Tuesday evening, 13 April.

Prior to the meeting, Mayor, Councillor Peter Johnston, was joined by Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of County Antrim, Mr David McCorkell KStJ, as he signed Council’s online book of condolence to mark the passing of Prince Philip.

The Mayor told the meeting:

“As Mayor, I was saddened by the announcement by Her Majesty The Queen, of the death of her beloved husband.

“On behalf of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and the citizens of the Borough, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family.

“Many tributes have been paid, condolences tendered, and stories recounted over the weekend about this remarkable man, who was just weeks away from his 100th birthday.

“I have sent a message extending our condolences on behalf of Council and the people of Mid and East Antrim to Her Majesty The Queen, assuring her and the Royal Family of our thoughts and prayers at this most difficult time.”

Mayor Johnston said the Duke of Edinburgh had a “tremendous sense of duty to the nation and to Her Majesty”.

“It is very clear that the loss of His Royal Highness is deeply felt across our Borough, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and beyond”, Councillor Johnston added.

“The prince was a committed environmental campaigner and wildlife advocate. He encouraged innovation and technological advancement.

“The prince could engage on many levels, making those he met feel at ease in his presence.

“Prince Philip enjoyed a distinguished naval career and was made Lord High Admiral in 2011. He was also appointed to Captain General of the Royal Marines, a position he held for 64 years.

“One of his most enduring achievements and lasting legacies is the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for young people.

“Above all, he has been Her Majesty The Queen’s mainstay and support throughout her reign.

“In mourning him, we are also thankful for a life so well lived.”
