​Step back in time this September with Carrickfergus Museum

Summer might be over but there is still plenty to look forward to this autumn at Carrickfergus Museum with several offerings for visitors to enjoy for free this September.

From children’s activities, to talks about conquests at the castle, there’s truly something to whet anyone’s appetite.

Saturday 7 September 11-12pm - Super Saturday (Kids aged 1-5)

Spark your little one’s imagination and creativity through sensory play and superb storytelling at our Super Saturday event. Held on the first Saturday of every month, music, dance and crafts designed to support early child development are a fun, free way to entertain your little ones.

This month’s event will see the return of the print workshop where toddlers and their grown-ups will be making their own replicas of Sir Arthur Chichester’s surcoat, on display at the museum – they’ll create their own versions fit for any budding Knight! Next month’s event on 5 October will see the return of puppeteer Jo Traer who will bring museum mascot Micah the monkey to life on another lively adventure with singing and dancing.

Thursday 12 September 7pm – Carrickfergus Landings: Commerce and Conquest

This talk complements an exhibition featuring a stunning hand crafted model of HMY Mary, the first Royal Yacht of the Royal Navy which brought King William to Carrickfergus in 1690. With the help of local historians David Hume and Helen Rankin, the event will explore Carrickfergus as a place of arrivals, looking at the town’s military significance and development of its historic harbour. From the first pier built by the Anglo Normans, to the modern marina, Carrickfergus has continually served its purpose as a significant landing point.

Saturday 14 September - European Heritage Open Day at Town Hall (11am) and Museum (12pm)

This year’s European Heritage Open Day will see Carrickfergus Museum and Town Hall come to life with special tours from Dr Ruth Bothwell. Ruth is behind the conservation works on the 17^th Century portraits by Davys Wilson, now on display in the council chamber. Come along to hear about who the Davys went from Welsh settlers to leading figures in the affairs of Carrickfergus. Hear surprising tales of the lives of High Sheriffs, Burgesses, Aldermen, Mayors and MPs.

Monday 16 September 7pm - Sean Lester talk & exhibition: Sticking to the Seat

Join political historian Dr Éamon Phoenix and Biographer Paul McNamara who will both explore Lester’s early journalistic and political career to his dramatic confrontation with the Nazi Party in 1930s Danzig. Looking at the significance and legacy of the man who was the last Secretary General of the League of Nations. There’s also a digital exhibition on the man whose story is one of perseverance and hope. The event is part of Good Relations Week and has received financial support from The Executive Office through Mid and East Antrim Borough Council's Good Relations Programme.
