Former Met Special Constable sentenced for multiple sex offences

A former volunteer Met Special Constable has been jailed for 24 years after being found guilty of committing a series of sexual offences, including the rape of a child.

Gwyn Samuels, formerly known as James Bubb, was convicted on Thursday, 28 August of five offences.

If followed a trial at Amersham Law Courts in a Thames Valley Police-led investigation and sentencing took place on Friday, 20 March. Bubb was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for life and will serve a further eight years on licence once released.

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Stancombe, Professional Standards, said: “Bubb’s actions were utterly despicable, and I commend the victim-survivors for their courage in coming forward, which has ultimately led to today’s long jail term.

“Bubb was suspended as soon as we became aware of these very serious allegations. No complaints had previously been made about Bubb’s conduct while serving as a Special Constable.

“Following the conclusion of criminal proceedings, Bubb was dismissed without notice and placed on the College of Policing barred list.

“The Met is committed to ensuring those who demonstrate this type of appalling behaviour have no place in our organisation.”

The charges related to incidents which occurred between January 2018 and April 2024 in London and Buckinghamshire.

Bubb was found guilty of several offences against one victim - assault of a child under 13 by penetration, rape of a child under 13, sexual activity with a child and assault by penetration – and rape of a second victim.

Bubb was immediately suspended from volunteer duties on Tuesday, 30 April 2024 after the arrest and dismissed without notice on Friday, 26 September.

Bubb begun volunteering with officers in the Central West Command Unit in September 2020 and was off-duty during all incidents.

Since the offending, Bubb has changed name to Gwyn Samuels and now self-identifies as a transgender woman.
