Mondelēz International Employees Get Their Hands Green for the Planet
On 1st October 2020, Mondelēz International held its annual Purpose Day. More than 25,000 employees around the world got their hands green for the planet by getting involved in sustainable activities from cooking with leftovers to planting trees in green spaces. This year the focus reflects the company’s commitment to minimising its impact on the environment by using less energy and water, reducing waste and decreasing emissions.
Established two years ago, Purpose Day was introduced to celebrate Mondelēz’s global purpose of ‘Snacking Made Right’ which aims to deliver the right snack, for the right moment, in the right way. Central to the company’s purpose is the sustainable sourcing of ingredients and minimising the environmental impact of its operations.
Mondelēz hosted a wide range of talks and activities to inspire employees to think and act green. To kick off the global event, the company’s Chairman and CEO, Dirk Van De Put hosted a LinkedIn Live global sustainability talk. In this lively and informative session, Van De Put and colleagues shared the company’s progress on its sustainability commitments and the plans to bring these efforts to life. Dirk Van de Put, stressed his belief that “now more than ever is the time for companies to do what’s right”.
Mondelēz held a range of environmentally sustainable activities for employees to engage with. ‘Green In 15’ sessions shared tips in 15 minutes on how to lead a more sustainable life. With 1,800 attendees across Northern Europe engaging in Purpose Day sessions, employees were creatively inspired to make sustainable commitments at home. Personal initiatives included upcycling wooden pallets to create herb gardens and building compost bins in local allotments to tackle vegetable and food waste.
Connecting employees to Mondelēz’s purpose-driven approach to sustainability drove high levels of engagement amongst its people and served to remind employees how small changes can have a big impact and deliver positive change.
