Massive demand for mystery shoppers continues to increase

With the success of brand new television series on Channel 4 starring Mary Portas, the mystery shopping industry is thriving right now in the UK. Regular shoppers are feeling empowered to change the future of British customer service levels and have decided to get involved by seeking mystery shopper jobs for themselves.

It’s not difficult to understand why else being a mystery shopper is so appealing for many. After all, there are few other jobs in the world where you can get paid for doing everything from eating in a restaurant to staying in a luxury hotel for the night. There is a catch however – you do need to report back with the findings from your visit on topics such as how good the customer service was or how well the store was laid out. Companies which use mystery shoppers are then able to use this feedback in order to improve.

For many it sounds like an opportunity too good to be true, and unfortunately this can often be the case. Finding out more information on how to become a secret shopper has previously been difficult without needing to pay – there are many unscrupulous websites looking to charge money for useless ‘information’ or ‘membership’ when it’s quite simply not worth it.

However, one innovative and appropriately named website is hoping to change this and make the world of mystery shopping freely accessible to as many people as possible – www.mysteryshopperjobs.co.uk.

Joshua Matthews, founder of Mystery Shopper Jobs, set the website up whilst being a mystery shopper himself after finding it difficult to find information for free. He said: “January has been an exceptionally busy month so far for us. Compared with the same period in December we have seen an increase in people wanting to become a mystery shopper by over 250%. It’s likely this increase is a combination of both people looking to make some extra cash at the start of the year along with the increased awareness mystery shopping has been provided on television recently.”

One part time mystery shopper, who preferred to be named only as ‘Maria’ so her identity was not revealed, commented: “Being a mystery shopper is great fun. It allows me to get paid whilst going shopping on a normal day and answering some simple questions. It’s not a replacement for my full time job though, but it does provide a nice second income and I just treat it as a hobby.”
