Haute couture hijacks hi-tech in Brits' Black Friday wish list

As new research* from Nectar uncovers the top ten items Brits hope to grab this Black Friday (25 November), the UK’s largest loyalty scheme has turned the findings into the ultimate Black Friday shop, made from the nation’s wish list itself.

Built to celebrate Nectar.com - an ‘all under one roof’ destination for Black Friday shoppers looking for exclusive deals – the unique shop is cleverly constructed from a canopy made of clothes, a DVD-tiled roof, iPad-paned windows and walls built from shoe boxes.

With 700 boxes of shoes, 500 DVDs, 150 soft toys, 100 phones, 50 items of clothing and five metres worth of books in one place, the store physically brings to life the top ten wish list.

The new list reveals clothes are the number one item savvy deal hunters are looking to buy in the sales, demystifying the notion that tech is top on the biggest shopping day of the year.

One in five Brits (22%) are hoping to bag a haute couture bargain, well ahead of plans for tech buys, with laptops (17%) and televisions (16%) coming in second and third. As parents pounce on treats for the kids this Christmas, toys are the fourth (15%) most looked for buy this Black Friday.

Commenting on the Black Friday findings, Managing Director of Nectar, James Moir said: “Brits are so determined to grab deals on everything from clothes to toys they will spend on average 2 hours 48 minutes pounding the pavements to tick off their wish list, so we want to make their lives easier. At Nectar.com we put everything under one roof to offer our cardholders access to exclusive online deals with hundreds of brands without the hassle of heading outdoors. Our unique shop brings that concept to life as we look forward to an exciting day of deal hunting this Black Friday.”

The top ten items Brits hope to snap up during the Black Friday sales are:

  • 1.Clothes
  • 2.Laptops
  • 3.Televisions
  • 4.Toys
  • 5.Mobile phones
  • 6.Shoes
  • 7.iPad or tablet devices
  • 8.Books
  • 9.DVDs
  • 10.Trainers

Designer handbags may not have made the top ten, but it seems female millennials (16-29) have the fashion accessory firmly in their sights, with one in 10 admitting they hope to snap one up at the sales. Make-up too is a top priority for this set of sales shoppers, as one in four plans to make the most of beauty bargains on Black Friday.

Despite the huge success of The Great British Bake Off, savvy shoppers do not look set to seize discounts on kitchen appliances, with less than 2% of us looking to hunt out a deal on spiralizers and stand mixers.

Already the biggest shopping day of the year, the research also revealed Brits intend to spend almost a quarter (22%)* of their Christmas budget in just one day this Black Friday.

From 25 November, Nectar cardholders will find Black Friday and Cyber Monday offers online with eBay, ASOS and Apple to name just a few. Cardholders should visit Nectar.com to take advantage of the offers.
