Receive Universal Credit? Don't miss the April ‘To Do’ you need to complete.

If you receive Universal Credit (UC) and claim housing costs to help pay your rent, it's time to make sure you complete an important update which you'll find in your UC journal.

At the beginning of April, the DWP sends a 'To Do' notifications to your Universal Credit journal. This will be titled “Confirm your housing costs”.

You must complete this task before the end of your Universal Credit assessment period in April 2026. If you don’t, your Universal Credit payment won’t increase to match your new rent—and you could lose out on the money you’re entitled to.

📝 How to Update Your Housing Costs

When your ‘To Do’ appears, here’s what to do:

1. Wait for the DWP notification. The ‘Confirm your housing costs’ task will appear in your journal in early April.

2. Use the rent letter we sent you in February. The information you’ll need to complete the ‘To Do’ is included in that letter including the amount of your new rent charge.

Why does this matter?

If you don’t tell the DWP about your rent increase:

  • Your Universal Credit won't be increased to cover your new rent
  • You may miss out on the correct amount of support

A few minutes updating your journal could make a big difference to your monthly budget!
